What is a Stroke?

A stroke (also known as cerebrovascular accident) occurs when there is a disruption in the blood supply to the brain. This can be caused by a blockage, breakage or bursting of an artery that supplies blood to the brain. The result of this is that the normal flow of oxygen and nutrients to the brain are disrupted causing the part of the brain that was without blood to be damaged.

An ‘ischaemic stroke’ is caused by a blocked artery, compared to a ‘haemorrhagic stroke’ which is caused by a bleed in the brain. Consequences of a stroke are often disability of some kind including the inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body and inability to speak or see as clearly as before.

Symptoms of stroke are sudden and include blurred vision in one or both eyes, numbness, paralysis (usually the face, arm or leg), inability to speak clearly, dizziness, and headache.

Risks of stroke include age (55 years and over), family history, gender (males are generally higher risk), prior heart attack, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, diet high in fats and cholesterol, obesity and lack of exercise.
